In horror, effects are often the composition. A long reverb can become an atmosphere, an extreme time-stretch can turn a single note into a drone, and granular processing can make a familiar sound feel wrong.
Granular processing chops a sound into tiny grains and sprays them back out. It's how something familiar, like a voice or a single cello note, becomes something that feels wrong. Feed it your own recordings rather than presets and you'll get sounds nobody else has.

Extreme stretching and pitch-shifting are the quickest ways to turn found sounds into usable drones and textures.
